Pinna nobilis (Pinna nobilis) is the largest Mediterranean bivalve, endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. It mainly inhabits sedimentary bottoms with meadows of sea flowers, and has been recorded at depths of 0.5 m to 60 m. In the Adriatic Sea, it can most often be found between 2 and 30 m deep. It can grow up to 120 cm and appears throughout the Adriatic. It has an important role in the ecosystem as a filter of the sea, and numerous species live on its shells.
The noble periska is a strictly protected species in Croatia in accordance with the Law on Nature Protection and the Ordinance on Strictly Protected Species, which includes the protection of the species and its habitats, and it is prohibited to deliberately catch or kill, disturb, destroy, damage or remove their developmental forms, damage or destroy their breeding or resting areas, keeping, transporting, selling, exchanging and offering for sale or exchange live or dead individuals.
